Project Summaries
The BioCarbon Fund was a World Bank-managed trust fund that is now closed. This website remains available for reference, but no further updates will be made.
The portfolio of the BioCarbon Fund included projects in 16 countries across five continents, restoring 150,000 hectares of degraded lands through afforestation and reforestation activities and reducing deforestation in over 350,000 hectares of land. Most of the projects were registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), with some registered under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).
Through these projects, the BioCarbon Fund worked with national entities, private companies, and non-governmental organizations. The Fund purchased a certain volume of carbon emission reductions (CER) credits generated from these projects throughout its lifetime via emission reduction purchase agreements (ERPAs). Carbon emission reduction credits from CDM projects were verified once every commitment period of the UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol. For VCS, projects were encouraged to undergo verification by an external verification body at least once every five years.
